Spanish Red Old Vines

Bring home some Spanish wines for the holidays!
We hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and continue to enjoy this wonderful time of year. This holiday season we've been on a huge Spanish wine kick. Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas...each introduced us to a new Spanish red wine, particularly from the Old Vines region. It can be easy to get overwhelmed with all the different varietals that Spain has to offer. If you're new to the country's wines or haven't given them a good try yet, we definitely advise that you start off with one of their most popular, the Garnacha. Below, we've highlighted 4 of our most recent discoveries this holiday season. We highly recommend you give them a try. Any one of them would make a nice, inexpensive, but quality addition to your holiday meal. Serve it this New Year's dinner or just enjoy it alone at home, curled up on the couch, on a chilly Winter night.
Garnacha (Grenache)
Calatayud, Spain
Average price: $15
Alcohol: 15%
Aroma: Dark and Red fruit scents with a bit of oakiness
Taste:  Intense fruit flavors of blackberries, plum, and cherries with traces of vanilla and spicy oak
Pairings and thoughts: A terrific, smooth, flavorful wine; great value for the price. Pairs perfectly with turkey, a nice roast or stew, as well as macaroni and cheese.
“Kickass” Garnacha
Carinena, Spain (Old Vines)

Taste: Berry flavors, particularly raspberry with trace of cassis
Pairings and thoughts: A very soft and smooth wine; excellent value for the price. Pairs perfectly with steak, chicken, and pasta dishes. We even enjoyed it on a night of some Moroccan cuisine.
Navarra, Spain
Average price: $10
Alcohol: 13.9%
Aroma: Dark fruit and berry scents with hints of espresso and chocolate
Taste: Fruity flavors of raspberries, plums and traces of toasty vanilla and spice
Pairings and thoughts: A soft, fruity and tasty blend; good value for the price. Pairs great with red meats, particularly a big juicy burger.
Calatayud, Spain
Average price: Under $10
Alcohol: 14.5%
Aroma: Dark and Red fruit scents with hint of toasted vanilla
Taste:  Intense fruit flavors of blackberries and plum with traces of dark chocolate and a black pepper finish, but still incredibly smooth and soft.
Pairings and thoughts: This wine is on fire…favorite of the night! Best value for the price. Pair it with steak, burgers, strong cheeses or just sip it alone. Highly recommend it!
The End.
