On the Thirty

Half of Vino & Vintage is spending some time with family and friends in Southern California this Summer. Our first foodie stop has been on our mind since it opened in March of this year! On the Thirty is the new place to be, eat, drink, and be seen eating and drinking, on Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks. Originally from Los Angeles and living in Philly for a few years now, I’ve been converted to a strictly East Coast pizza lover. So, when I heard that On the Thirty claimed to be “home to the best pizza you’ve EVER had”, I knew I’d be the right judge on this case.  Ok, so the REAL reason I was anxious to try out this new place? It’s all in the name.  On the Thirty….as in 30 craft beers and 30 WINES by the GLASS. Enough said.

We arrived on a very warm Friday evening and the place was packed. Luckily a couple of seats opened up at the bar and we eagerly sat down to check out the list of 30 wines.  We started with a 2009 Cima Riesling from Lucia Highlands. (Sadly, they were out of the Viognier.) It was very light with traces of apple and pear. No damage done at $6 a glass. We also had a 2011 Frost Watch, Kismet, Sauvignon Blanc. Also light bodied, it was on the crispy, dry side with citrus flavors. Price jump to $10.  Our table was ready just in time – now on to the reds…

wpid-CAM02558.jpgChoosing a glass of red wine was no easy task. Some old favorites, including a 2008 Napa Valley Rutherford Hill, along with plenty of Cabernets, a Pinot Noir from Monterey, and a blend from Paso Robles made up this amazing California wine list….and yes, we had a glass (maybe 2) of almost half of it. Medium bodied, full bodied…something for everyone! It’s worth visiting On the Thirty just for the wine.  Now on to the food…

The Mix & Match menu offers a little something for everyone. We indulged in a little prosciutto, some aged Gouda and a Cremont. All delicious. The charcuterie/cheese board was simple, but well balanced. The best part? A Fig jam you wanted to bottle up and take home!

Honestly, just about everything we tried at On the Thirty would be worth taking home…if we would’ve had any left over! Go hungry. Order a variety and share. That’s exactly what we did and loved every dish…

Co-owner of On the Thirty, Justin Urich, joined us at the table and let us try these flavorful crab cakes, not currently on the menu.

Ok, we have to admit…this is some damn good pizza. The fresh ingredients and organic flour bring delicious flavors that are hard to find in West Coast Pizza. We definitely have a contender here.

With a menu that boasts a variety of dishes all made from local, organic, and free range ingredients, excellent wine and beer selections, and great service, it’s no wonder On the Thirty is already experiencing repeat customers and celebrity sightings, from Khloe Kardashian to Willam Shatner.  We will definitely be planning a second visit to try some of their other appetizers, the sandwiches, and of course more wines.  Prices are slightly high without being unreasonable. If anything was a little disjointed, it was the location of the restaurant.  While being located in the La Reina Shopping Center offered easy parking in their covered structure, the quality experienced at On The Thirty was not typically what you’d expect from a shopping center restaurant. Once inside though, you are transported to a unique ambience and experience. We learned from co-owner, Justin Urich, that both he and his partner completely redesigned the place themselves.

The passion and love they have for what they do goes beyond the beautiful decor.  Both Justin and co-owner Shawn Kerwin have a very hands-on approach, from helping in the kitchen to greeting patrons to making wine pairing suggestions.  On the Thirty is definitely a welcomed breath of fresh air in the Valley, offering a little something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to watch a game, grab some beers with friends at the bar, listen to live music, or planning a date night with good food and wine…On the Thirty will make it happen.

  1. Thanks for the great preview. I live past the West Valley and I’m always looking for good places where I can meet my friends from the other side of the hill. We’re checking this out tonight – now I will expect a crowd. As long as I know ahead of time, I don’t mind as much!
