Sure we enjoy our white wine during the Summer, but we just can’t stay away from our red for too long. Aside from some Sangria, a glass of a light Pinot Noir always works well in warm weather. This past week we’ve been sipping on some nice ones…
Winemaker’s Notes: A pleasant growing season yielded an average sized crop. This wine benefits greatly from about an hour of decanting to allow the concentrated aromatic and flavor profiles to fully open up. The complexity of flavor found in Pinot Noir from Lafond Vineyard is a wonderful match with savory foods and a classic with grilled salmon or mushrooms.
Our Thoughts and Pairings: A surprisingly dark looking Pinot and high in alcohol, with scents of cherry and pepper. However, still a light sip with flavors of cherry, plum, raspberry and a hint of vanilla oak. We paired it with an array of grilled meats. Enjoy by itself too!
Winemaker’s Notes: In the search for superior fruit, winemaker Bruce McGuire looked north to Monterey County to find fruit forward, easy to drink Pinot Noir for this bottling. These flavors combined with firm acidity make for a versatile wine.
Our Thoughts and Pairings: This wine was a gift given to us along with the wine above. Coincidentally, they both come from the same wine maker. Mr. McGuire definitely knows a thing or two about wine…specifically Pinot Noir. This was a bright Pinot with fruity scents and slight oak. With flavors of red berries with traces of earthiness, it was smooth and dry. We paired it with a pesto pasta and Parmesan cheese. Yum!
Winemaker’s Notes: A cool growing season resulted in this delicately perfumed Pinot Noir with aromas of cherry; on the palate, a hint of earthiness mingles with red fruit ﬂavors and a pleasing mineral ﬁnish. The natural acidity makes this wine a good food companion. Enjoy our Pinot Noir now or cellar for ﬁve to seven years.
Our Thoughts and Pairings: Definitely picked up the light cherry scents and red fruit flavors. A little bit tart, reminiscent of raspberry jam. Enjoy on its own and can even be served slightly chilled for a refreshing sip. Great Summer Red wine.
Winemaker’s Notes: The myriad of dark fruit and floral notes in this Pinot Noir come from the cool, windy Los Carneros American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the southern reaches of Napa Valley. Satsuma plum, blackberry, red rose and violet notes weave through the enticing aromas, mingled with warm nuances of vanilla and toasted oak from barrel aging. Silky, elegant flavors echo the aromas, adding blueberry and plum to the rich fruit complexity. You’ll find this wine’s lush flavors, bright acidity and fine tannins are perfectly balanced to complement a broad range of foods, from grilled salmon and chicken, to lamb and wild mushrooms.
Our Thoughts and Pairings: After reading the winemaker’s notes you wouldn’t think we were discussing a Pinot Noir. We were anticipating an unusually heavy pinot, but were surprised to find that it was fruity and refreshing, as it should be. There were definitely more flavors involved than usual, but they blended perfectly on the nose, as well as the palate. Cherries, berries, with a touch of oak. The wine was great all on its own and pairs well with some Lamb or even seafood.
