A Couple of Cabs

It’s been a very busy Fall season and we are behind on wine reviews…and so many other things. Of course, we always find time to drink wine. ūüėČ This week’s snow storm was the prefect reason to play catch up. We are so ready to welcome Winter, take a breather, have some more wine, and then play catch up all over again. Here are a couple of Cabernet Sauvignons we enjoyed recently that really stood out for us. They would make great (and affordable) Holiday gifts for the wine lovers in your life. ¬†Cheers!

Wines that Rock
Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon
Cabernet Sauvignon
Mendocino County, CA
Vintage: 2010
Alcohol: 13.5%
Average Price: $15

Winemaker’s Notes: Aromas of black currant/cherries with notes of cedar/vanilla. Flavors of currant and cherry with a plush structure and rounded tannins.¬†Now, pop the cork, turn up Pink Floyd and enjoy the taste of The Dark Side of the Moon.

Our Thoughts and Pairings: What’s not to love about this wine?! First of all, the bottle alone catches your attention immediately. Then the name…along with the vintage and alcohol content, the label even breaks it down to include Artist and Album (obviously Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon) along with the Producer, aka Winemaker, Mark Beaman. Very clever. In the end though, this smooth Cab-based blend steals the show for it’s complexity and intense aromas and flavors. It paired fantastically with our steak dinner. Added bonus: this wine was produced using sustainable methods and even comes with eco-friendly packaging. We give this an A-. (Can’t wait to try the other Wines that Rock. )

Cabernet Sauvignon
North Coast, California
Vintage: 2011
Alcohol: 13.5%
Average Price: $20

Winemaker’s Notes:¬†EDGE is a lush, complex Cabernet Sauvignon produced from grapes which were carefully selected from the great old vineyards in the Silverado Trail area of Napa Valley and the North Coast.¬†Produced with North Coast fruit, our product is a cutting edge wine without the cutting edge price.

Our Thoughts and Pairings: Also a Cabernet based blend that includes a little Merlot and Syrah, this wine is smooth and complex. With strong notes of dark plum, traces of ripe berries, and a touch of coffee, this intense wine has an edgy quality to it that suits its name. Sure to be a hit at any dinner party and it is an excellent value for the price. It paired nicely with our grilled lamb and veggies dinner, but we enjoyed it on its own, as well. We give it a B+.
